Install the Chrome Extension
To get started, install the Metadata Scrubbing Tool for Gmail Chrome extension. Follow these steps:
- Visit the Chrome Web Store and search for “Metadata Scrubbing Tool for Gmail” or click here.
- Click on “Add to Chrome”.
- Confirm the installation by clicking “Add extension” in the pop-up dialog.
- Pin the extension to your Chrome toolbar for easy access, by clicking on the puzzle icon in the toolbar and selecting the pin icon next to the extension.

Once the extension is installed, confirm all file types you want to scrub metadata from are enabled.
- Click on the extension icon in the Chrome toolbar.
- Navigate to the “Metadata” tab.
- The supported file types within your license will be listed here.
- These file types are forced-enabled by default. If you do not wish to scrub metadata, use the “native” attach button in Gmail.

Using the tool with Gmail:
- Compose a new email or reply to an existing one.
- Click the “Clean and Attach” button in the email composition window.
- The tool will remove any metadata from the attached files.
- Send your email with confidence, knowing your attachments are secure.
